History

by J. Buck Jabaily

Single Carrot Theatre began as one of "those" ideas. The ones that you discuss over a pitcher at 11 pm on a Thursday night in the full waxing of spring. It is one of those ideas that you would normally look back on on Friday morning at 8 am with a mouth full of cotton and a stomach that feels like a sack of pennies has been sewn into it and think, "thank god we aren't really going to do that". But as the relief sets in while you lay clutching your forehead where it feels like a small toy train tunnel has been drilled, a pang of regret hits that you don't have the follow through to get out of bed and start a revolution.

But Single Carrot was destined for a different path. It was not going to be a broken promise. This idea was too good. It spoke too strongly. It felt too right. And when those electric words, "let's start our own theatre company" passed like little lightning bolts from those two lips to those two ears, the idea had already become a reality. Two days later, twenty-two University of Colorado theatre students and recent graduates sat in a small classroom, with hearts racing and tall words leaping from their mouths imbued with overly-ambitious aspirations they laid out their intent to conquer the world.

Two years later, seven of those original twenty-two have moved to Baltimore, MD. Two more travel through from time to time to collaborate and assist on projects. Three beyond that help advise decisions, weigh in and offer support from the sidelines.

In the course of the two years between May 2005 and May 2007 Single Carrot Theatre (originally named New Twenty-Two Productions) produced four full productions and eight workshop productions in Boulder, CO and Baltimore, MD while elements of the company traveled the breadth of the world, worked untold numbers of inane jobs and consumed copious quantities of Carlo Rossi Chianti Classico.

The company chose to leave Colorado (even though many of the company members are native to the state) for Baltimore, MD. Baltimore was chosen out of over 50 contenders for its size, location, cost of living, charm, arts funding, for the supportive quality and friendliness of its theatre scene, and overall, the sense that a small theatre had a chance of success there. Baltimore has for years been fighting to not disappear as other cities facing the same conditions have done. In fact, the city is vibrant, diverse and full of the stuff of life--making it a darn good place to start a revolution.
